What lies beneath…
We have an old coal store next to (but not part of) the basement. I keep threatening to lock J in there – but in all seriousness, it is a rather creepy place. When we moved in we had to get a new door made for it as the original had completely decayed at the bottom, and yesterday I was giving it a couple of coats of primer paint. So I had a good look inside for the first time.
It is about 3m by 4m and has a barrel vault ceiling with a chute in the ceiling where the coal would have been delivered. Apparently a house like Castlebank would have used 30 to 40 tons of coal a year. That is some carbon footprint!
There is a strange feature on the floor which looks a bit like a grave. At some point if I feel enthusiastic we will need to move it and see what is under it. J is a big fan of the TV show “Bones” so he can take the lead on that.
