Fruits of the garden

For all we are in an urban setting, the garden is full of life (too much so in one respect as I have just had to buy some insect repellent as I keep getting bitten by something).

As I have mentioned, we have masses of oregano and it is now flowering and is covered with bees and butterflies.

The wheat and barley that seems to have grown from spilled grains from the bird feeder is nearly ripe.  I am going to harvest it and make a tiny amount of flour from it – we will have a “bird seed loaf”.

And then there are the apples which are coming along apace.  We have quite a lot of apple trees (and they must be common here because our neighbours have them too).  Every year in Argyll we had a glut of them and ended up with more than we really wanted.  I’ll have to see if I can find something inventive to make with them – cider would be the obvious thing as J is very fond of it – but I have seen it made and it seems to take quite a lot of equipment.  I think I may just stick with pies.

I have had local strawberries almost every day since we moved in – Fife is obviously great for them because there are masses of wild ones in the garden too – I have been consuming every one I see.
