Food Reclamation

My mother is a terrible woman for constantly buying food and not eating it up.  When we visited her yesterday I had cause to open her freezer (or one of her freezers – believe it or not for an elderly woman living alone – she has two) to look for some ice cream, I discovered many ice covered lumps stopping the drawers opening properly (as well as about 10 naan breads and 6 half empty packets of chips).

On investigation, much of the freezer contents appeared to be fish.  The local fishmonger’s van comes round, my mum buys fish from it, puts it into the freezer, and the next week buys more, without the necessary intermediate stage, of eating the first lot.

So I grabbed a few of the icy lumps and brought them home with me in the interests of clearing a bit more freezer space.  It turned out that some of my acquisitions actually were pieces of haddock and cod.  There was also a huge bag of giant prawns which must have cost a fortune.

So thank you Mum for the luxury fish and mushroom pie with sautéed prawns .  It was very good.

The cats (particularly Amber) would also like to extent their gratitude, because some of the “fish” was actually chicken breasts and roast beef.  They greatly enjoyed these and would like you to clean out your freezer more often.
