The Cable Man Cometh
R and I got up early and made our way to Cupar. We have tried a different way every time we have been, and today we went across the Kincardine Bridge. I had never been over it before – another fine piece of 1930s architecture.
J and I had been very happy and upbeat about Castlebank the day before, but R poured a considerable amount of cold water over our enthusiasm. He walked around the house, sniffing, sucking his teeth in true tradesman fashion and inspecting every cable and pipe with displeasure.
He was obviously very worried about the Internet. Our plan is to have one connection into the basement – this was where the previous owners had had their connection, so we will use Zen for this over the existing BT line. Then we will put in a second connection using a cable company called FibreOne. Ideally this will come into R’s office on the first floor. None of this is proven however, and there are a number of unknowables, one of which is the thickness of the Victorian stone walls and the impact this will have on propagation of signal. At least in the first instance, everything is going to have to be wireless. If it turns out that none of this works it is going to have a very serious impact on our life in the new house – particularly as R and I have to work from there. So it is understandable that R is concerned.
And then a long journey back to Argyll – not feeling as happy as I had been the previous day. And tomorrow our possessions are leaving Donich Lodge.
