In which I do a foolish thing

In the middle of cooking lunch today, the cooker suddenly stopped working.  The oven turned off as did all the rings and there was no light on the switch beside it.  R and I ran around doing all the usual things like checking the RCU but to no avail.  So we called an electrician who said he would come later that afternoon.

Lunch was to have been cauliflower cheese with baked potatoes and luckily I was three quarters through making it.  I managed (eventually) to sort of cook the cauliflower in the microwave and then heat the sauce over it.  I have to say this was not nice, and while I was grappling with it the electrician turned up early so I didn’t eat it anyway.

He had a look around, and within five minutes found the problem.  The switch for the cooker was not the one right next to it with no light on it (we have not worked out what that switch is actually for – pretty typically for the electrics at Castlebank); the actual switch was at the back of a cupboard, and when I had been getting the dish out of the cupboard for the cauliflower – I had switched it off by mistake.  Whoops!  I have form for this as I did broadly the same thing back when we lived in Livingston and I called out a technician to a “faulty” dryer where I had accidentally turned it down to half heat.

After that, J and I went out and strung a clothes line in the garden so that we wouldn’t have to use dryers for everything.  And had an argument about how best to tighten the line.

So not our best day since moving in.
