Eggs and Pumpkin

I found this egg shell on the lawn under the cherry trees yesterday.  It was cleanly broken in half with no residue on the inside making it likely that it is the discard from a successful hatching rather than predation.  Apparently it is normal for birds to discard old shells some distance from their nests as I could find no evidence of one.  From its size and colour (half the size of a hen’s egg and pure white) I think it is a wood pigeon’s egg; there are lots of these around as R is discovering from their tendency to sit cooing on the chimney above his office (we need a pigeon protector on the chimney pot to stop this).

I also had an amusing experience with an app called “Picture This” which I am using to identify plants in my garden.  I have it on my phone and last night I noticed it had synced to my iPad as well.  So I went into it to see if it scaled properly and it immediately went into demo mode with the camera pointing at my feet.

Apparently my feet look like “Field Pumpkins” and not only that but they are unhealthy field pumpkins and need “some attention”.
