Tiles and bread

We had the tilers here today putting up the new tiles in our main bathroom.  This room was not in a good state when we moved in – it had a hideous 1990s acrylic bath and for some reason no shower although it is a big room.  So we have had a new bathroom suite put in with a state of the art shower and new tiles – metro ones in blue and white.

We are also getting new flooring, which I must admit is vinyl cushion floor.  I would have liked encaustic tiles, or at least ceramic ones to mimic encaustic ones but a) the real encaustic tiles are extremely expensive b) my foot is very painful if I walk barefoot on hard surfaces c) I am always nervous of someone slipping and ceramic ones are very prone to that.  So the cushion floor mimics the tiles but is soft, warm and cheap.  Sorry house.

On a different subject I made a curry today (a vegan one with lentils, potato and cauliflower) and with it some homemade naan breads.  These are really impossible to make at home and have come out the way they would in a restaurant because most homes do not have a tandoor oven, but mine are quite a good substitute.  I just make a batch of white bread in the bread maker (adding some garlic puree and chopped coriander) and run it on the “pizza” dough setting (takes 45 minutes) on my machine.

I stretch it into appropriate shapes and bake it in the oven for about 15 minutes at about 220 fan.  Then when it is nearly cooked, I take it out and brush it liberally with oil mixed with more garlic puree.  Then back in the oven for a few minutes.   They look like this.

They are very tasty with the curry, although they do not have the floppiness of a real naan from a restaurant.  They are better than the ready made ones from the supermarket though, plus they are not packed with additives and they cost a small fraction of the price.
