Lenten Biscuits

I made some biscuits for a church group today.  I had been going to make my (and R’s) favourite “Christmas Biscuit” but as it consists almost entirely of sugar, butter, nuts, dried fruit and spices it somehow didn’t seem to appropriate for Lent.  So I made these rather more ascetic biscuits which are largely oatmeal and wholemeal flour.  The honey in the picture is local “Schoolhouse Honey” which I bought at the Cupar Flower Show last year.

Actually, I am being a little economical with the truth – they do have the “good” ingredients, but they also have butter and honey in them, neither which would have been allowed during the Lenten fasts of the middle ages (unless you could fork out the cash for a dispensation on the grounds of ill health).

They are probably more restrained than half-coated chocolate digestives which were the other biscuit on offer though.
