In which M meets the wrong train
It has become somewhat of a tradition that we meet each other off trains. It is only 10 minutes walk to the station and it is a nice breath of fresh air and an opportunity for a chat on the way back. Yesterday I did a “Find my…” for R who was giving a talk in Edinburgh. I saw that his blip was in Haymarket, and presumed he had got on the 21:00 Dundee train in Waverly and was on his way home. So off I went to the station, and when I got there at 21:58 – checked again, and he was in Kirkcaldy.
Of course what I did not realize was that his talk had been in Fountainbridge and he had never been to Waverley in the first place. He was on the 21:30 Aberdeen train and wasn’t due in for 20 minutes. So I didn’t wait.
As I do not have a picture of the event described – here is a random one of the famous statue near the station – it was erected in 1856, but it is not one of those random Victorian worthies who seem to be famous for not much. In fact David Maitland Makgill Crichton was responsible for Cupar getting a proper bridge across the railway, and not just a level crossing as the Council of the time had wanted. Good for him – perhaps we can get him back to stop the incessant road works and over-zealous 20mph speed limits.
