St Mary’s Garden

J and I went to the little branch church in Ladybank to help clear the back garden today.

It was basically a solid, and very daunting mass of weeds.

I was expecting them to be a bugger to clear – but actually they pulled up really easily, partially I think because there is an anti-weed membrane a few centimetres under the soil, which must have been preventing the roots from getting real purchase.  So we removed all of those plus a load of nettles, stickleback and other nasties – five full giant bags full.

I also strimmed around the lawn and cleared the base of the gate, plus pulled out some massive brambles which were coming over the fence from next door.

This was after we had finished for the day.

We can’t grass over the bit with the membrane because grass needs to put down proper roots as well; instead we are thinking of putting down some “spreaders” like Juniper, creeping thyme and stonecrop.
