Conkers

When I was a child (1970s) conkers (note for foreigners – nuts of the horse chestnut tree) were a highly valued commodity – in fact we used to risk severe adult retribution by persistently crawling through holes in fences to raid the few trees in the neighbour hood.

Then we would make holes in them – attach string and skin each others’ knuckles trying to break them.

Now the practice has obviously died out and the nuts are not valued by anyone – there are loads of trees in Cupar and the nuts just lie about the roads.  Someone still cares, however, as today we noticed a bowl of them had been put out for any takers.
