Kitchen – stage three

So with the units replaced and the new floor laid, time to go to work on decorating. Much as I would love to have professional decorators do this, it is way too expensive – I had a quote for decorating our drawing room come in at £5500 and whilst this was extortionate, we are still looking at paying £1000 for a room, whilst buying the materials is much much cheaper. For the kitchen, it is about £50 for paint, plus £20 for tile adhesive and spacers (I have tiles left over from the bathroom).

The kitchen currently has a dirty stripy wallpaper with green flowers and a rather 1990s flower frieze around the top.

The plan is to give it a coat of shellac based primer (to hide the pattern without lifting the paper off as a water based one might) and then two coats of daffodil white matt. The only problem is that with the very high ceilings, painting above the units involves standing right at the top of an eight step ladder. So I have been doing this today. J, who is taller than me, can do this without going so high up the ladder (which is good as he doesn’t like heights) and he has been painting too. Between both of us, we have done about 2/3rds of it. The residual problem is that at the corners of the room where there are also units – none of us can reach far enough over just using the ladder, so on Sunday, I (being the lightest of the 3 of us) will need to stand partially on the worktops to do it) – I think that I can do it without putting more than half my weight on it, and I am not that heavy so it will be alright – probably.

Tomorrow we are going to Stirling for my last day in this world…
