Renovation

Another woodworking project

This bookcase used to stand on top of a desk in my grandmother’s house in Blackpool. Unfortunately the desk was thrown away years ago and the bookcase has been in a garage for the last 10 years or so. It is in quite good condition apart from a trim missing off the top which can easily be replaced.

A more serious problem was that the door was locked and there was no key, but my trusty bunch of skeleton keys did the trick. I had actually bought these as a kind of a joke because they looked like the archetypal housekeepers keys carried by women like Mrs Hughes (in Downton Abbey) as a symbol of authority, but I have actually used them several times to open pieces of old furniture where the original key is missing.

The bookcase looks silly sitting on the ground so I am going to make a little base for it out of the piece of wood on the left of the photo and stain it in dark oak.

Then I will put it in the dining room – I have moved the comfy chairs “Cosy Corner” area to the drawing room so we can take advantage of the living gas fire in there.
