String of Horses

R and I went off for a little holiday to celebrate (!) my 60th birthday today – leaving J holding the fort and the cats (not literally).

We went to an old coaching inn  where my Mum took me for my first ever grown up meal in a restaurant on my 10th birthday – the “String of Horses” in Faugh near Carlisle.  I wore a red dress she had made me and I had prawn cocktail, steak and chips and black forest gateau.

So fifty years on R and I went again today.  As far as I remember it has not changed much – still a really old fashioned coaching inn with oak benches and open fires

Before dinner we went for a walk.  There were some strange objects moving on the “road” ahead – actually little more than a track.  R correctly identified them as some very free range chickens.  There was a gorgeous sunset on the way back.

There was no prawn cocktail or black forest gateau available on the menu though, so I had pigs in blankets and sticky toffee pudding.  We also had a four poster bed!
